A diminutive, obviously-French man, Louis has a charming and debonair air about him.
Before the war Louis LeBeau, a Frenchman, was a gourmet chef who also had developed a quite good singing voice and entertainment skills. He claimed to have been a chemist, a dance instructor (with a string of dancing schools), a dress designer ("Yvette of Paris"), and an art student, but only to mislead the Germans. He was in the French Free Air Force but not for long as he apparently was captured sometime in 1940. In the camp, he joined Hogan's Heroes, most often playing a support role in bribing the Germans with food or otherwise waylaying them with culinary or entertaining tactics. Of course, like all of his group he was a capable fighter and saboteur. What Louis did after the war is up to the player; he may have gone on as a haute couture chef or, like the actor who played him, become a notable singer. While the picture shows Louis as a younger man, in real life the actor, Robert Clary, developed white hair, though until his more senior years looked very much the same.

LeBeau is highly patriotic, stubborn, opinionated, and rather hot-headed and tempermental. He was always voting for the most extreme way of handling a problem, telling off some high-ranking German officer, or taking offense at something someone says. (http://classictv.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=classictv&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fbarracks.4t.com%2F). LeBeau is also an incurable romantic, who, at first glance anyway, finds it hard to believe anything but good about a beautiful woman.

"Pizza! You would ask a Frenchman to cook a piece of cardboard with tomato sauce?"

Fairly obvious, Louis has amazing skills with food and can use them in a number of ways, from taming a wild dog to delaying an entire group of people to getting special favors. Note that Louis is also fairly capable hand to hand and generally in combat, given his wartime experiences.
